Arriving at IAH in the evening – Stay Overnight at a Hotel Near the Airport or the Space Center?

Hi everyone, I’m a mother traveling with my son (incoming freshman at Texas A&M). We’ll be arriving at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) around 6pm and hope to visit Space Center Houston the next day before heading to College Station.

I’m trying to figure out what would make the most sense logistically: Would it be better to stay overnight near the airport and travel to the Space Center in the morning, or stay closer to the Space Center from the start (reach at night)?

Also, what’s the best way for two people to get from IAH to the Space Center and then on to College Station?

I’d really appreciate any suggestions on safe and practical transport options, as this is our first time in the US.
