are there any rescue/foster options for reactive dogs
After 2 months of emailing different rescues, I have decided to come to reddit.
Backstory:
I have a 70 lb stranger and dog reactive gsd that is 2 yrs old. Training has started basically the moment I got him. His leash reactivity is better now and he can be fine when dogs and people are across the street. However, as he has gotten bigger, there have been times when he has dragged me across the concrete to get to another dog when the dog got too close. I recognize that I can't leave him with my parents (hes escaped from his leash when with them numerous times) and I definitely cannot take him with me to college where there will be people around everywhere.
I have tried contacting rescues in austin, houston, and central texas. I have tried contacting my breeder (but they already have multiple dogs in their house and I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving my dog with them), I have asked friends as well.
I really, really do not want him to end up at the shelter. He has been boarded before and is neutral with the staff and likes licking them. However, he DOES NOT EAT. He always loses a scary amount of weight in a 1 week period. When he goes to a stranger's house, after the initial barking, he is relaxed and eats normally.
Just if anyone knows a rescue or foster home open for dog/stranger reactive dogs, please send their information over. I only have a couple of months left before I leave for college. At this point, I am willing to drive outside of texas to allow my dog to stay at a foster home.
