Are the Astros Really as bad with RISP as we thought?

Short Answer – Yes

Bases Empty –

  • 15th in PA (118), 3rd in Hits (33), 1st in BA (.314),
  • 1st in wOBA (.410), 1st in OPS (.942), 2nd in ISO (.238)
  • T-2nd in HR/RBI (6), 2nd Fewest K’s (19), 8th in BB’s (12)

Runners On –

  • 8th in PA (107), 12th in Hits (23), 17th in BA (.235)
  • 21st in wOBA (.281), 22nd in OPS (.619), 24th in ISO (.092)
  • T-14th in HR (2), 20th in RBI (15). T-17th Fewest K’s (20), T-15th in BB’s (7)

Runners in Scoring Position –

  • 10th in PA (59), T-16th in Hits (11), 23rd in BA (.208)
  • 27th in wOBA (.521), 25th in OPS (.244), 27th in ISO (.038)
  • T-23rd in HR (0), T-22nd in RBI (11), T-11th Fewest K’s (10), T-14th in BB’s (5)

Overall (Empty-On-RISP) –

  • 15th-8th-10th in PA, 3rd-12th-T16th in Hits, 1st-17th-23rd in BA
  • 1st-21st-27th wOBA, 1st-22nd-25th OPS, 2nd-24th-27th in ISO
  • T2nd-T14th-T23rd in HR, T2nd-20th-T22nd in RBI, 2nd-T17th-T11th in K, 8th-T15th-T14th in BB

Big Takeaways –

  • -OPS falling to .244 with RISP despite a .942 OPS with the bases empty is extremely concerning.
  • +OPS Being .942 with the bases empty is not extremely concerning, if we can just get RISP in check.
  • -Getting Down to 27th in wOBA explains a lot so far.
  • +As with OPS, .410 wOBA with the bases Empty is great.
  • +Offense with the bases empty has been elite so far, despite the small sample size. If we can get those Astros when Runners are on, RISP, then we should be able to make up this poor opening week fairly quickly.
  • -If we get RISP Astros with the Bases Empty, the hole will only get larger.
  • I believe that we will get the 1st in BA, wOBA, and OPS Astros soon enough with Runners On. As stated previously, those Astros don’t go 1-5 through 6. Those Astros don’t score 3-4 Runs a Game for a Month straight. Those Astros win the Division.
