Are sub $1000/month houses for rent legit?

My lease is ending so I'm looking for a new place to stay, probably somewhere else in Houston cause my roommate is leaving and I won't be able to afford our current place (2 bedroom apartment). I was looking online and found tons and tons of houses (?) available for <$1000. Last year when I was looking I couldn't really find anything <$1000, and I have lots of friends paying ~$1400ish for their single (like Museum District or Midtown).

Is there some catch that I should know about? I'm assuming for the houses/townhouses, there's no extra services (pool, maintenance?, gym, etc), but is there something else I'm missing? Like will they jack up the rent immediately or something (most have clauses saying rent can change whenever)? I'm finding places that have look nice (online at least) going for like $850/month, that include gas, water, and electricity. That's crazy. I've noticed a few of the actual houses don't come with appliances, but most appear to.

Did I just miss this last year or do I need to be careful about getting scammed / things being cheap for some other reason (noise, safety, idk etc)? Or like it's one house but divided into 6 units or something? I've seen a few of those but usually it's pretty clear AFAICT, and I'm still seeing plenty of places that appear to be a normal house (or at least the first floor… I'm not really sure how it's broken up tbh).
