Antone’s Famous Po’ Boys Houston Medical Center Restaurant Is Now Open

Approximately nine months in the making, Antone’s Famous Po’ Boys’ new location at 6618 Fannin in the Medical Center area is now open. It’s the first full-fledged new one opened since the West Loop location over a decade ago. (In the interim, Antone’s Famous Po’ Boys opened a kiosk at Greenway Plaza, and rapidly grew the business by expanding its deliveries to Austin in 2018.)

Specifically, the new shop is on the first floor of the Medical Towers Building at the corner of Fannin and Dryden. Local firm Gin Design Group — known for its work on Eunice and the Memorial-area Dish Society location, among others  — was tapped for special interior touches (and are soon upgrading the existing restaurants on T.C. Jester and West Loop South) while Houston builder Construction Concepts handled the overall buildout.

The new location offers the same menu and pricing as others. In addition to the namesake po’ boys, owner company Legacy Restaurant Group, which also operates The Original Ninfa’s, often taps executive chef Alex Padilla to create new dishes. Several of his original creations are on the menu, including the Tex-Mex Cheesesteak, which was named the 2019 Best Sandwich in America by the Restaurant Hospitality website. Many of the dishes are not only housemade but hot. These include an excellent pressed Cuban sandwich, gumbo (vegetarian, chicken & andouille and seafood), a great fried seafood platter and a muffuletta with ham, mortadella, salami, provolone, olive salad and the proper type of bread.

Customers short on time are likely to find the new Express Lane handy. It allows them to grab the traditional po’ boys (Original, Super Original, Piggy, Turkey & Swiss, Pimento Cheese or Tuna), salads, sides, dessert (such as the hefty brownie or cookies) or drinks from the cold cases, check out and be on their way. Businesses in the Medical Center are likely to benefit from the party trays and catering service available for pickup or delivery.

“We are very pleased with our expanded menu featuring a wide variety of sandwiches, gumbos, salads, and packaged ‘grab and go’ items – we think this is a perfect fit for the employees and visitors in the Medical Center – whether they’re looking for a quick bite on the run or a seated meal,” said Legacy Restaurants CEO Jonathan Horowitz via a press release.

Antone’s Famous Po’ Boy hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Its phone number is (832) 667-1873 and additional information is on the website
