Altuve’s HR stats before, during, after 2017 lid-banging scheme (which he didn’t use pretty much at all and definitely didn’t benefit from much at all)
I created this analysis for the current post on r/mlb about Altuve's HR stats, thought I would post it here too!
2011: 0.04 HR/game
2012: 0.05 HR/game
2013: 0.03 HR/game
2014: 0.04 HR/game
2015: 0.10 HR/game
2016: 0.15 HR/game
2017: 0.16 HR/game but throw this year out due to trash can banging (There were only 24 pitches in the 2017 season where Altuve received a trash can bang according to the very thorough data analysis, only 10 of which he swung at and none of which were home runs, but go ahead and throw out the entire 2017 season) https://signstealingscandal.com/altuve/
2018: 0.09 HR/game
2019: 0.25 HR/game
2020: 0.10 HR/game (Altuve and team were dealing with the scandal breaking, Altuve felt so bad he couldn't perform and asked to be taken out of the lineup)
2021: 0.21 HR/game
2022: 0.20 HR/game
2023: 0.19 HR/game
2024: 0.13 HR/game
2025: 0.16 HR/game
2011-2016: 0.07 HR/game
2018-2025: 0.17 HR/game
2019-2025: 0.19 HR/game
2020-2025: 0.17 HR/game
2021-2025: 0.18 HR/game
Altuve hit his career high of 31 home runs in a single season TWICE and neither of these seasons was 2017 – they were both after the trash can banging scheme. He hit more home runs in a single season than 2017 THREE TIMES since then.
Conclusion: Altuve hit more home runs per game without/after the trash can banging than during the trash can banging. The banging scheme didn't work.
Also – everyone should watch these 2 videos in their entirety to be informed (still, be careful to not be defensive and not defend or embrace cheating which we aren't):
