Advice on neighborhoods to live in north of Houston?

My bf and I are looking to move into a rental home in June. He works in Porter and I work in Houston, and we’re looking for an area where neither of us have to take toll roads or drive more than a 45 min commute. What I’ve heard from most people is that the northeast neighborhoods in and outside the loop aren’t great, but I’m not sure what other options we have. I’m hoping someone has some insight on a neighborhood I may have overlooked (I’ll also take advice on what areas to avoid). Thank you!
