Advice on lakes to fish in the Houston Area

I'm planning a fishing trip with a friend this Sunday and would love to tap into the local expertise. We primarily do a lot of salt water fishing in the Galveston/Texas City area but are interested in getting on some fresh water action. Specifically looking for insights on public locations to fish on the banks of Lake Houston, Sheldon, or even Lake Conroe.

Any success in these areas? Any particular days or times you prefer? We really want to get onto some panfish, specifically crappie or white bass and anything in between to eat! but am also very open to some catfishing. Any favorite lures, baits, or rigs that have worked well for you?
