Starting in December, Mexican Sugar will pour up over 150 different tequilas and mezcals in Houston’s Regent Square

Texas is big on its whiskey and tequila, and before the year’s end, a Dallas restaurant is coming to Houston to unleash a world of agave-based spirits.

Mexican Sugar, which has outposts in Plano, Las Colinas, and Uptown Dallas, is slated to open its newest location in Regent Square in Houston’s Montrose area this December, according to a release. Located at 3505 West Dallas Street, next door to Georgia James Steakhouse, the two-story restaurant claims 13,000 square feet, making way for 375 diners to enjoy Mexican cuisine and Mexican Sugar’s Agave Library, which pours up more than 150 types of tequila and mezcal and can be sampled in signature or customizable flights during tastings led by staff.

A peek at the menu shows that there are at least five categories of agave spirits, including añejo, tequila that has been aged between one and three years in specific barrels; extra añejo tequila, which has been aged a minimum of three years; reposado, tequila that has been aged anywhere from two months to a year, and blanco tequilas, which has been aged up to two months, and mezcal.

Mexican Sugar will offer hand-pressed tortillas to envelope proteins and fresh ingredients.

The menu will aim to capture the essence of Mexico City, with dishes — some changing seasonally — that include hand-pressed tortillas made with heirloom masa, plus staple Mexican dishes like tacos, enchiladas, fajitas, and ceviches, and more inventive plates, like grilled Angus skirt steak, pecan mole rib-eye, and lobster fundito. (Eater Dallas’s editor Courtney Smith notes that Mexican Sugar has a top-notch hamburger.) Weekend brunch will feature a combination of sweet and savory, with cajeta French toast, vanilla cinnamon pancakes, and Benedictos rancheros, served with cocktails, margaritas, Cava mimosas, Bloody Marias, and other drinks made with fresh juices.

Owned by Dallas-based hospitality group FB Society, Mexican Sugar’s Houston opening follows that of its sister restaurant Haywire, which opened a location in Memorial City in June. FB Society also owns a wine bar and restaurant, Sixty Vines, and a restaurant, Whiskey Cake.
