A poll worker let a cop cut in front of me
I voted yesterday morning and was near the front of the line when the polls opened. As the first people were being checked in, the guy working the doors escorted a uniformed police officer to the front of the line and said, “I’m putting him in front of you because he has to get to work.”
I didn’t think much of it at first, but as I stood there waiting I got kind of angry about it. Don’t we all have things to do? Don’t lots of people have work? This guy gets to skip the line because he has a badge and a gun, voting shouldn’t be easier for him than anyone else. Everyone should stand in line the same way, I don’t care if they are governors or grocery store workers. The line wasn’t even that long, about a dozen people.
I got home and looked up TX voting laws and sure enough voting priority is only supposed to be given to certain people with disabilities. I told my spouse how I felt and what happened, and all I got was “Please don’t mess with the police.” This made me more determined. I’m not going to be scared to stand up and say something. I tweeted at the County DA and County Judge, but I am an internet nobody with a single friend who follows me. I filed a formal complaint online with the DA. I have not complained to the Secretary of State, but I may do that next. I really don’t trust those in power to take this seriously or do anything. What should I do next? Am I alone in caring about this?
Note: This was in Fort Bend County.
