Help me find something to love about Houston before I’m out of here
There are – of course – many kind people in Houston as there are everywhere, and I am in no way saying everything here is bad. However, I am struggling to understand the love people have for this city, and after 2.5 years living here I still don’t get it. I know this isn’t a me issue or a culture-shock issue, as I’ve lived across the world and never seen anything like the behavior from many residents of this city – ever.
I have never lived anywhere that had such a large number of people talking endless s**t about places to which they have never been and defending the way Houston is run because they don’t know it doesn’t have to be like this. I’ve primarily noticed these issues from white Texas natives (I am a white American so this isn’t just a racial issue, though I’ve also seen my fair share of racist nonsense here). I believe this to be a result of literally never leaving except to go to a resort in Mexico. Honestly sick of native & white houstonians touting the demogaphic diversity while shunning anyone who doesn’t fully assimilate culturally (including literally anyone from any other state who doesn’t agree that Houston is god’s gift to this earth). I moved here from Lebanon and found it much nicer time living there, and wish i still was. I literally felt safer living in Bogotá, and the people were actually nice (here, my very own neighbors literally ignore me when I say hi).
I have never seen such blatant disregard for the social contact on such a wide scale – the amount of littering, rude, and otherwise antisocial behavior is wild. This city has almost no natural beauty and the drivers seem like they actually want to die (I’m starting to get it). The air smells like crap and Mexico literally has better infrastructure but this state has a MUCH larger GDP?? Make it make sense.
I haven’t voiced these complaints to people who were born and raised here, but on the rare occasion I have raised an objection to my power going out bi-monthly, people bring up the food. Hot take, but every major American city has great food and Houston’s is actually sub-par compared to the likes of LA, NOLA, Chicago and NYC. Adding cheddar and frying it doesn’t always make it better. Fight me.
COL isn’t even lower when accounting for the hotels I had to get bc of my power being out for 20 days last year, the food I had to replace, the sales tax of 8%, the property crime and the insurance rates. Also, ya get what you pay for, and that has never been more evident to me. A&M is bizarrely culty. They get SUPER upset if you mention ANY of these things while shitting on my home state endlessly (which is fair, but at least I have a sense of humor about it). They have never even been to this state.
Before saying “leave if you don’t like it” I literally have already signed a lease elsewhere. Anyone have anything they really love that isn’t the food or the diversity? Really trying to be positive here but finding it very hard.
