Massive BB&T-SunTrust bank merger closes, creating Truist Financial

BB&T Corp., based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Atlanta-based SunTrust Banks Inc. became Truist Financial Corp. over the weekend, closing out this year’s largest — and most talked about — bank merger.

The new bank is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. The companies, billing the transaction as a merger of equals, valued the all-stock deal at $66 billion. Federal regulators signed off on the deal in November.
