Texans didn't get 'deluxe nut package' at NFL trade deadline – Aaron Wilson
The reasons why the Texans didn't trade wide receiver Will Fuller to the Green Bay Packers ultimately came down to a disconnect over value.
The Texans held extensive trade conversations with the Packers and couldn't agree on draft pick compensation as the 1-6 AFC South franchise wanted a second-round draft pick in exchange for him, according to league sources not authorized to speak publicly. The Packers declined to meet that asking price, instead offering middle-round draft pick compensation and also wanting the Texans to pay a portion of Fuller's remaining $10.162 million fifth-year club option, according to sources.
Texans interim coach Romeo Crennel emphasized to Fuller before the trade deadline that he didn't want to trade him. He was adamant, too, that the Texans wanted to get appropriate value if they had chosen to move on from one of the most dangerous deep threats in the NFL.
"I told him that before the trade thing even started, I told him that I wanted him on the team," Crennel said Wednesday morning one day after the NFL trade deadline. " I wanted all these guys on the team. I didn't want to trade anybody. I wanted them all on the team.
"When you're talking about trading, I'm not taking peanuts, right? Nobody really came through with a deluxe nut package. If there had been some deluxe nuts laid out on the table, it could have been a different deal."
The Texans also declined to trade outside linebacker Jacob Martin back to the Seattle Seahawks after being offered a fifth-round draft pick, according to sources, one year after trading for the Katy native in the Jadeveon Clowney trade that netted a third-round draft pick, Martin and linebacker Barkevious Mingo.
Crennel hopes that now that the deadline has expired, the focus can remain on the field instead of the uncertainty created in the locker room by trade scenarios and rumors.
"I think so," Crennel said. " That's what should happen. Guys aren't worried about being traded and stuff like that. Now, let's focus on football and trying to win some games."
