My voting story: A beautiful moment
I went to vote in Harris County this afternoon, like (hopefully) all of you have done already. The line was short, with maybe five people ahead of me before the finger condom table, and it was great. After the digit rubber dispenser, I had to wait another minute or two to move to the actual voting room. In that brief moment, the Karen behind me in line that had no mask was asked if she would like one, as mini-rubbers weren’t the only protection they could offer. She proceeded to quote governor Abbott’s executive order (down to the date) regarding face masks to the best of her (obviously rehearsed) ability and declare that she would not comply, as the key word was apparently “recommend” or something. She sounded like a recruit in boot camp trying to recite her general orders. The nice man with the knuckle prophylactics then calmly responded to her by agreeing that he has no authority to require her to put on a mask, but reminded her that the mask isn’t there for her protection, but for the protection of others, and the average age of the volunteers in the room she was about to enter was greater than 70 years old. Karen put on a mask, and it was one of the best moments I’ve had in a long time.
Maybe this isn’t completely Houston centric, but it happened here, and made my week.
Edit: Punctuation and stuff, and unlike actual Election Day, the liquor store is open, plus I’m typing this on an iPhone SE. Don’t judge.
