Delayed/cancelled flight Southwest Airlines

Last night (10/6/2024) I was scheduled to fly back from San Diego to Houston at 7:25 PM on Southwest Flight WN3402 scheduled to arrive 12:35 AM. Throughout the day the flight departure kept getting later. When I got to the airport it was 1.5 hours delayed. By the time we boarded the flight was over 2.5 hours delayed. We taxied on the runway than turned around and went back to the gate. The pilot announced that due to being so late Hobby told them that they were closing the runways for maintenance and we wouldn't be able to land. The flight was rescheduled to 10/7/24 8 am today. I've never heard of an airport telling a flight they can't land. Does this sound like Southwest is lying? They used this excuse that it wasn't in their control to not provide any hotel or compensation.
