Electricity plans for a couple of broke college students

As the title suggests I am in desperate need of advice to understand how electricity plans work and how to get a good deal. My best friend and I are planning to move in to an apartment together in the Houston area and this will be the first time both of us are living on our own away from our parents. We both have full time jobs and have classes in the morning so we’re rarely home during the day, the only person/thing home during the day is my dog. While looking around for plans, I’ve seen some plans advertising free nights and weekends but when I try to look more into it some people say it’s a scam or that it only works for set increments of the day. Basically I’m stupid and lost and need someone to dumb it down for me 🙁

Also, any other advice on living on your own would be greatly appreciated:)
