I almost got scammed out of $1000. Should I report it?

Long story short, I was selling a laptop on Craigslist, and the scammer almost managed to make me send, with a fake payment.

I realized this at the very last minute, and fortunately I didn't lose anything so frankly I don't really care anymore. Though I guess that this is not his first time and probably there is a lot more victims. And he is still waiting for my package(The address would not be his, but he'll need to physically come to get it) so maybe it's a good opportunity to actually catch him?

Though should I bother to report at all? It seems like the police wouldn't care anything <$5000.
