HCTRA roadside signs… "Report incidents to 281 384-7500" – Is it a good idea to tell motorists a phone number on these toll way signs?
Seems to me like the toll road authorities could put something more useful on these signs.
There's no mention of the fact that pretty much any incident on a tollway is worthy of 9-1-1, a number we don't have to write down.
What use is the non-emergency number to us? What kind of incident do they want us to report?
If we have a passenger that can jot down that number, then we're good. But I'd guess 90% of people seeing these signs are driving.
"Ooooh, I just saw an incident, let me go ahead and call that number." So, what, pull over and write down the number?
Take a picture of it with your phone while you're driving? Or, worse, try to dial that number on your phone while you're going along at 65 or 70 MPH?
HCTRA, why not use our money in a safer way? Don't put up a phone number for us to try to memorize. If an incident is important enough to report, it's a 9-1-1 call. Non-emergency phone numbers are easily found via web search when we're not driving.
