Further explanation of the alteration of the Stefon Diggs contract (essentially ripping up the remaining years after 2024) by Nick Caserio after being asked by my mom at the Fan Fest Q&A

Context: Stefon Diggs had a contract that ran through 2027, with minimal salary guarantees. But, after the trade, the Texans chose to essentially do away with that contract and instead put him on a 1 year $22.52M deal for this year, allowing him to reach free agency after this year. This is a questionable move, that to my knowledge, hasn't been fully explained.

My mom's question (after starting with how happy she's been with the offseason and excited for the season etc.): "My question is about the Stefon Diggs trade. So why did we drop the last two years of his contract when he did not have a no trade clause?"

Note: I think it was actually the last 3 years of the deal to 2027, but either way…

Nick Caserio: "It’s a good question. No, we’re excited about having Stefon here. I would say any dialogue or discussion we have with players and/or the representatives is always a negotiation. So we kinda look at everything we factor in. I would say sometimes what’s written on the paper isn’t really, what’s real, so, we just try to take all the information in and make a good decision, and ultimately, do what we feel is best for the team and the organization. We’re excited about Stef. Y’know, he’s been here this offseason, he’s working hard, so we’re excited to add him to the group."
