Schools – how do you research?

Looking at buying a home in Houston (north or northwest suburbs potentially) and want to consider schools. But how do you know what schools are good and which aren’t? Besides inner city vs suburbs? Not all suburban schools are made the same I’m sure. Is there a Kelley blue book or some kind of standard research/rating of schools? Do you have anecdotal opinions to share?
