Explosion of caterpillars

I’ve lived here all my life and have never seen this many of these monsters. I can’t even walk through my yard without dodging a dozen. I’m paranoid the dogs are going to step on them or one will fall on me. Is there some sort of phenomenon that is causing this explosion or are we just unlucky this year with a nest nearby?
