Beautiful flowers

I visited Houston this past weekend, and while driving from the Children's Museum through the adjacent neighborhood, my wife and I noticed that several spots had the most beautiful flowery shrubs. The flowers were almost always bright pink and pretty much star-shaped. What are they?
