How to find about events and activities in Houston?

Hi, I recently moved to Houston from a European country and am in a fix ever since. What do people do here after office hours and during weekends? The people at my office have strongly recommended me not to walk around and conveyed that the public transport isn’t really safe. I can’t get a driving licence here so renting out a car is out of question and uber is expensive and quite restrictive for the “explore around” vibe. That means I need to be very specific about the locations. What are the best ways to get to know about events and activities in Houston? Are there any interesting classes that I can join? I live around Westchase.
