How safe is the medical center area?

Hello guys!

I hope y'all are havin a wonderful time, but I just had a bit of a terrible experience. I've been living about a year and a half in Houston, very close to the medical center.

Now, me (31M) and my wife(31F) love going out for night walks, about 7:30pm to 9pm, around the neighborhood, close to Rice. Today, out of nowhere, while me and my wife were walking on the street talking in spanish, and this white 6 feet 5 inch guy crosses the street looking straight at us, spits on my face and then yells at me telling me god told him to do it. After cussing at him he ran away, but the whole experience was just…. well, terrifying.

I come from Mexico. I know what looking over my shoulder every 5 steps while walking on the streets feels like. I know to not let anyone come close, but here i let my guard down, I felt safe. I am the kind of guy every granma stops to ask for directions (you know, baby faced and always smiling).

In Mexico you will get mugged, you give them you phone and money and they will go away. I dont think giving my wallet to a person harboring so much hate will do much to keep me safe if he had a gun.

So, im coming here asking honestly, if you guys think Houston is a safe city, at all.

Cheers.

TL;DR

Random guys spat on my face for speaking in spanish on the street (or just for existing who knows), is this normal here? Do i need pepper spray o a taser to walk here?
