HumbleISD is a Joke
TL;DR
Recently I had worked for Cambridge School (located on Timber Forest Dr) for a little over a year as a sub. In the beginning of August they had asked me to be a “Stand-In-Teacher” for this class labeled BSC – basically a bunch of kids who have severe behavioral issues. I needed the money so I accepted, I figured I’ve seen the horrors of this school already I think I can handle it. The sub coordinator told me I am just a sub so I am not required to do any certified teacher work whatsoever that included: calling parents, making lesson plans, decorating the room ($200 came from my pocket), be in meetings that were only meant for staff, etc,. Now, I could’ve just mindlessly gave them pointless paper work and take attendance but I felt in my heart that I could try my best to actually teach them. I didn’t want to do a disservice for them while solely focusing on getting their behavior right.
Mentally that job was draining and the administrations, counselors, and therapist try to act like they care for the students and for staff but they don’t. I went thinking I can be heard and figure out ways to help these kids and myself and the meeting was pointless – just a bunch of surface level empathy (I’ll get to the point of these meetings I had later). When I had asked for help with lunch rotations I knew they bullshitted me about giving an extra hand. There always supposed to be 2 adults in the room with BSC – that being said Cambridge was/is completely and utterly understaffed and a lot of the time it would only be just one left in with four kids who are a severe danger to others and themselves. And for whatever reason the administration always had these meetings to come and try to fit another kid in the school. More than 40% of the staff were subs (there are at least 21-25 staff who are permanent)… most of them weren’t CPI trained to transport a kid into the “blue room” (room for detainments).
These kids (despite being labeled under SPED) are seriously manipulative and sneaky…they know right from wrong. They know they can get away with a lot of s**t because the administration coddles them. There has been students who stole $2,000 from a teachers credit card, poured trash over a paraprofessional (she had to get a mental health day off), hit and spat on multiple teachers, threatened to kill teachers and their families, kids possessing guns in their house and administration didn’t do anything until I expressed my safety concerns – all this and there’s no discipline. Cambridge is supposed to reintegrate these kids back to their home campus but how if they just let them run the school? And the kids know it too. The kids taunt the teachers, “ They can’t do nun cuz I’m a kid.” And the charges that have been made by the teachers always dropped. These are actual crimes these kids are doing and they get a grace period because they’re minors and they have a 501 plan in their name. And then their parents are the same, I had one harassing me and lying on my name for whatever reason. But teachers aren’t safe from them either because the principle and administration had told a teacher to attend this meeting; this teacher was blindsided that it was a meeting with a parent who’s child no longer attends her class just so that she can be berated for an hour – literally an hour of constant s**t thrown at her for no reason.
This is the same school that had that incident with the sub slapping a Down syndrome girl. First off, I was there when it happened, this little girl curses so much, and can hold a conversation with anyone – she knows enough what she can and cannot do. That being said the sub heard her cuss and playfully and without threat, got a soap in a napkin and gestured to put it in her mouth; the girl slaps this old HumbleISD retired woman and instinctively the sub slapped back (this is bad, I know) but if the administrators are going to tell and email what had happened, at least don’t lie about the details. There was no soap in mouth like how the article claimed and there’s video proof (there’s videos everywhere in that school). Oh and the day after that happened, administrators told each staff not to talk to the news crew and held a meeting about it too. Coincidentally, they rechecked cameras in the rooms just in time before the school board and investigators were to see anything out of the norm.
I had one kid directed their anger towards me after they had a fight with another kid and tried to come at me but was stopped by my coworkers. However, this kid managed to hit the back of my head and that’s when I turned around and was about to lose it. Anybody would get mad right? But the administration saw that I wouldn’t be a good fit because I had confided in them about my stresses and they used that against me. They let me go because they were worried about my mental health. I had mentioned that the only reason why I stayed was because it was good pay and the principle said, “ I don’t know your financial situation is but I’m sure someone close to you won’t let you out and uncared for, there’s family members and etc,.” Like dude really? After everything that I’ve done to help this school out they’re gonna let me go instead of providing an appropriate environment for all staff. They don’t care about my mental health, they didn’t care about a staff member who had s skin graft on her hand and she still had to restrain kids.
Also I would like to attach an audio of these accounts that I dealt with every day that I was there, just don’t know how. Another thing, what should I do in regards of that kid physically assaulting me, do charges really matter if they’re just gonna get dropped anyway?
