In depth breakdown of 2023 Running game
Does anyone have any good/legit film breakdown gurus that have gone and broken down Texans running game struggles?
One thing that is well known is that the Texans struggled running the ball.
It was supposed to be Dameon Pierce's breakout year in a scheme that is typically running back friendly and he ended up looking terrible.
Were the running struggles due to personnel? Oline? Lack of stud RBs? Dameon Pierce has no vision? Singletary is washed out?
Or was it coaching? Were coaches not able to get players to run the ZBS like they are supposed to? Were they more occupied in getting a patchwork oline to gel with basics and fundementals? Is it the lack of a running coordinator coach to help Slowik scheme up running plays that work?
Both our Oline and RB coach seem to have decent reputations.
Personally I would have loved to have seen a coaching change with our RB coach. He's been with the Texans for 6 six years and in those 6 years, we havent really had an amazing run game or running back. Last year was the exception with Dameon Pierce breaking out, but IMHO, it was more on Dameon Pierce raw power and refusing to go down easy. He never really had big holes to run through. If anything, I believe on average his intial contact was behind the line of scrimmage and most of his yards came after initial contact. In 7 games of the 2022 season his Y/A was below 4.00
I know a lot of people want the Texans to go out and spend big on free agency and get a proven RB and even though there's some players that could become available and could come in and make a difference, I think Texans still have other coaching and player personnel issues to fix before they bring in the free agent.
I would love to see some good videos breaking down the running back struggles a bit more.
