Could we consider trading Pressly?
I had this thought a few weeks ago and I’m curious to hear some thoughts on it.
Every payroll projection has us around or just barely under the tax threshold. We have very little room to do much this offseason without first offloading some $$, which got me wondering where we could find that $$. Pressly is contributing $15m to the luxury tax this year, with Fangraphs valuing him at $10.9m in 2022 and $8.5m in 2023.
Trading him would be a pretty significant payroll savings and could allow some room to fill a Michael Brantley sized hole in LF.
We would lose one of our top back-end bullpen arms. However, Abreu has shown himself to be more than capable of taking over closer duties. Also, it is much easier and cheaper to assess and fill bullpen needs mid-season via trades than it is to try to trade for another bat.
Obviously, you’d need a team interested in taking Pressly. My first thought would be the Orioles. Bautista is likely out until 2025, and Pressly has a mutual option in 2025 so he fills the 1-year need the orioles might have. Not sure if their ownership would want to take on that $15m tho.
