Animal shelter/welfare volunteer opportunities?

Every week I keep seeing more strays posted on FB and more shelters unable to take them due to capacity issues. I have a dog myself and I just really want to try to help in some way. I know a lot of shelter’s have Amazon wish lists and ask for monetary donations…but was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a particularly good experience at a shelter? I would ideally like to help dogs get fostered, adopted out, or just raise awareness of some kind.
