Was Martin Maldonado really as bad as everyone says he was this season?
I was inspired to put this together by responses I saw in this post. I know Maldy is lauded for his intangibles, but it's important to know what the tangibles are, too.
Maldy has gotten a bad rap for his performance this season, but was it deserved?
Let's take a look at his tangibles.
First, catcher blocking data from Baseball Savant:
- Blocks Above Average per game (among qualified): 0.03, 25th in MLB (out of 68, Yainer is 1st).
Next is pop time:
- Arm: 85.1 mph, good for 15th (out of 81; Yainer is 1st)
- Pop time to 2B: 1.93, 24th in MLB (Yainer is 11th)
Next is catcher throwing:
- CS Above Avg: 2, 19th in MLB (of 63)
- CS%: 16%, 39th in MLB (of 63)
- Est CS%: 13%, 62nd in MLB (of 63)
Next, catcher framing data from Baseball Savant:
- Catcher framing runs (min 100 pitches called): -17, worst in MLB. Tied for second worst season since tracking began in 2015 (Salvador Perez, -18 in 2018).
- Strike rate (among qualified): 41%, worst in MLB. Among the bottom 10 season performances since tracking began in 2015.
Lastly, Martin isn't known for his bat, but just how good (or bad) was he?
Baseball Savant Standard Stats (among 212 batters with 400 PAs)

- OBP: .258 (3rd worst in MLB)

Baseball Savant Percentile Rankings Leaderboard (among 258 qualified batters (min 340 PAs)):
- xwOBA: 2nd percentile
- xBA: 1st percentile
- xSLG: 14th percentile
- xISO: 54th percentile
- xOBP: 1st percentile (Billy Beane in tears)
- Brl/Brl%: 26th/51st percentile
- EV/Max EV: 32nd/49th percentile
- HardHit%: 45th percentile
- K%: 2nd percentile
- BB%: 37th percentile
- Whiff%: 7th percentile

- Speed: 1st percentile
So what do you think, has he been treated fairly? Unfairly? Are his stats different than what you expected? Should we bring him back next year?
