Some under-appreciated Caserio moves

– Signing Steven Nelson:

Nelson was very good last year, despite being the #1 corner for most of the year. This year he's playing even better and is well on his way to getting a massive free agency contract. He was a solid, up and coming corner for the Eagles and we signed him cheap. So cheap in fact that Nelson successfully got himself a small raise during training camp, but now we really should proactively throw him a 3 year $50m extension offer before he hits the open market this offseason…the guys a stud and we should lock him up to pair alongside Stingley long-term

– Signing George Fant:

Fant was a good starter for the Seahawks for awhile and signed with the Jets a few years back on a relatively big contract (3yr/28m) but was injured a lot and played poorly. Everyone assumed he was washed, but we scooped him as a swing tackle on a veteran minimum contract and so far he looks REALLY solid at RT. So far through 3 games he has a 72 PFF grade, which is top 15 amongst RT's. We got ourselves a great swing tackle for nothing. We'd be completely fucked if Nick didnt sign him

– Signing Robert Woods:

Woods is another guy that people incorrectly assumed was washed, without looking at the context behind his poor 2022 season. He recovered very quickly from his 2021 achilles tear and played all 17 games for Tennessee. However, the Titans ran the ball more than any team last year and Tannehill only played in 9 games. Most of last year he was catching passes from fucking Malik Willis and other 3rd string backups. Sure, Woods isnt what he was in his prime (a top 10-15 WR), but hes still really good and physically fine. He's also known to be a top-tier locker room guy and great run blocker. We got him at a flexible 2yr / $20m where we could cut him after this season at no cost. This was a great signing. We have a genuinely good WR corps right now and a great vet to teach Nico, Tank and Metchie. At the level he's playing at, I'd expect him to still be on the team next year. Everyone was bashing this signing and it was silly

Drafting Davis Mills and trading up for Nico Collins in 2021:

These were his first two draft picks and I dont think he gets nearly enough credit for how well they've benefited the franchise. 2021 offseason was an all time low point for the Texans. We were awful, but didnt have a 1st or 2nd round draft pick and our 'star' QB was publicly mocking the franchise and demanding a trade. Will Fuller who was having a breakout year in 2020 got busted for doping and left in Free Agency. We also were the joke of the league after BoB shipped off Deandre Hopkins for David Johnson and a 2nd rounder we used on fucking Ross Blacklock.

Nico was a great prospect, but sat out 2020 bc of Covid. He likely would have been a 1st or 2nd rounder had he played, but since he sat out and didnt necessarily ball out at the combine he dropped a lot and was viewed as a semi-risky prospect. Caserio knew he was undervalued at the end of the 3rd and traded up to grab him when we desperately needed WR help. Now that he has good QB play we're seeing him live up to his star potential. Great pick

Yes Davis Mills hasnt been very good and the Texans were REALLY hard to watch the past 2 seasons. However, with the Deshaun situation going on it was really smart to take a flyer on a talented rookie QB and get someone in our program alongside Tyrod Taylor. Davis ultimately was thrown into the fire with an awful roster really early on and he predictably lost a bunch of games, but his overall numbers were decent. We also got a cheap tank commander for 2022 (instead of signing a rando free agent) and now we have a very good backup QB with experience. Overall I actually think Mills will end up getting a chance to start in a better situation elsewhere at some point and end up having a few more seasons starting in the league

Drafting 2 centers in 2023:

Center was our biggest priority outside of QB going into the draft and after drafting Juice Scruggs in the 2nd (who I still have high hopes for) he easily could have stopped, but instead to bolster competition/depth he drafted Jarrett Patterson (who was a team captain at Notre Dame). JP and Fant have saved the line so far and we have a battle-tested stud in the program now. Idk what will happen once Juice comes back, but I have a feeling JP will start somewhere on the line no matter what going forward

– Trading for Blake Cashman in 2022 offseason:

The guys been good LB depth for us and had his best game as a pro yesterday. We need more help at LB, but bringing him into the program for a 6th rounder was a good move

– Keeping Brevin Jordan:

Jordan was known to be talented, but after a terrible 2022 season I gave up on the guy and assumed we were only rolling with 2 tight ends (plus Andrew Beck) and that he would be cut. I was genuinely surprised when he made the 53 man roster (over guys like Desmond King), but he's been really solid so far. Great touchdown catch yesterday and an important 3rd down catch last week. Honestly could see him continuing to take reps away from Schultz until our Oline is fully healthy and I'm fine with that
