What the hell happened to the Kemah Boardwalk?

Visited recently on a Friday night for the first time in about 10 years and it was DEAD, It used to be such a fun place to visit back then. Numerous abandoned restaurants and the entire boardwalk is overrun with stray cats.

Anyone else been recently?
