Do dehumidifiers help?

So I live in an old apartment with an old, undersized A/C unit. Thankfully I have a ceiling fan over my bed, but it would be nice to be a bit more comfortable at night. I just wondered if a dehumidifier would help. The small A/C units are swamp cooler types that don't work in Houston's weather.
