Can you really surf at Surfside Beach?

I moved back to the Houston area after living in Tokyo for 12 years. While I lived there I picked up surfing since there were some pretty famous surfing spots east in Chiba and south in Shonan. I would take a train to this surf spot Onjuku almost every week in the summer.

I was always under the the impression that the Gulf was crap for wave generation, but it seems there is some surfing culture at some places like Surfside. Anyone have any experiences at Surfside? It's only an hour away from where I live so it would be nice to ride a longboard every now and then.
