Yesterday a dog attacked me while walking on the sidewalk. The responding police officer took my id from my wallet and ran me for warrants.
I was walking down the sidewalk when a German Shepherd that was in it's front yard, not on a leash ran up and attacked me, while I was holding my 2 month old daughter. Completely unprovoked attack, the owner managed to get the dog off me and came out to help me after the dog was in the house. Owner is taking responsibility and already offered me his insurance and to cover any and all medical bills.
My wife and another neighbor grabbed my daughter and rushed her to an ED 2 miles away. She had a small bite on her hand, but it wouldn't stop bleeding. She's doing fine just some bruising and swelling. I did everything I could to keep the dog from getting to her. I didn't go to the hospital because we have another child I had to wait for someone to come watch.
As I was sitting on the sidewalk with my hand and arm covered in blood a police officer showed up, took my wallet that was on the ground because the dog ripped my pants apart. Grabbed my license to run me for warrants as I sat profusely bleeding and trying to stop it with paper towels the dog owner had brought me. He just called in my information while standing 2 feet from me without offering me any first aid I would assume officers have in their vehicle.
He claimed his body cam wasn't working but his dash cam "should be on."
Cop said he called for EMS to "street treat" since I didn't go with my wife. Ambulance never showed up so another neighbor that saw everything drove me to the ED where they couldn't even do stiches because its a dog bite. Took almost 8 hours to stop all the bleeding.
Animal control officer contacted me today and said people usually don't report dog attacks (he said they should always) so the cops don't know how to handle them.
He also told me that the owner of the dog has a sister that is on the police department that showed up. Nothing is happening to the owner and the dog is on a 10 day "home quarantine," that appears to be on the honor system.
Its not HPD, but a town right next door. Local cop, not a sheriff. His complete disregard for me bleeding and just grabbing my wallet and ID to run me for warrants felt like the biggest violation that night.
I don't feel like being on the news but I might end up turning the dashcam in to KHOU. I felt like I wasn't even a person. Just a possible arrest he might be able to ad to his list.
Now I know why people don't report dog attacks.
