Adopting a puppy

Hi y’all—I’m new to Houston. My boyfriend and I want to adopt a dog, but it seems like no shelters let you go and look and the online meet and greet doesn’t seem like it would suffice. I know Houston Pets Alive has the Saturday event and we went to that today but they didn’t have the selection we wanted (I think we went too late…) We ideally want a puppy bc I have a cat and I think getting a small puppy would be ideal for her to accept into our home. Any ideas? Any suggestions?
