Harris County’s jail mail system is going digital — and it’s got some advocates worried
Harris County Jail is taking away traditional mail from people jailed at the facility, citing safety concerns and efficiency. They are distributing tablets to people where some free content, like scanned mail, and many paid communication/entertainment applications will be made available. This is all part of a new, expanded contract with oft-criticized jail tech company Securus. The County is expected to make a minimum commission of 500,000 dollars off the use of the devices.
