Alonso tredwell drafted by the Astros
MLB scouting of him:
Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Curveball: 50 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 55 | Control: 55 | Overall: 50
Tredwell was an exciting junior at Mater Dei High School in California in 2020 when he needed Tommy John surgery in January, forcing him out of action for that season and the summer showcase circuit. He went on to UCLA and took over the closer’s role for the Bruins as a freshman in '22, finishing with a 2.11 ERA and .195 batting average against. A move into UCLA’s weekend rotation was slowed a bit this spring with a back issue, though his combination of size and feel for pitching were still on display.
Though he’s 6-foot-8, Tredwell’s strike-throwing ability really stands out, as the freshman All-American walked just 1.1 per nine in 2022. He has plenty of stuff to fill up the zone with. While his fastball averaged around 91 mph last year, he was 92-94 for much of the fall, touching as high as 96; and it looked like those velocity gains were real when he was 100 percent this spring. He backs his heater up with an 80-mph slider that misses a ton of bats and could be a plus pitch in time, a slower average curve and a changeup that’s an above-average offering as well.
Tredwell is a good athlete on the mound, which helps him repeat his smooth delivery well and fill up the zone with all four pitches. There could be more in the tank here and teams that like taking strike-throwing pitchers and work with them to improve velocity should have interest in the first couple of rounds. The athletic: Tredwell was heading for a probable Day 1 selection when he suffered a back injury in late April – later listed as “back and ribs,” which sounds like a barbecue order – that ended his season. He sits 91-93 mph with a 55 slider and average curveball, throwing the fastball for a ton of strikes, although he barely used a changeup and had trouble with left-handed batters this year. Despite his height and long limbs, he throws a ton of strikes, in part because he has a short arm action that he can repeat more easily. He had Tommy John surgery in 2020 and is an age-eligible sophomore.
And a certain idiotic OP
6’8 pitchers typically scare me and tredwell is no exception. Tredwell dealt with several injuries while at UCLA coming into the school with TJ and battling back issues recently. Tredwell as a pitcher has never eclipsed 50IP in college which is also scary. He has an incredible slider and a fastball that may in fact be picking up a few ticks on the gun. With good control and four pitches some team will take a shot on tredwell. Where he goes will be in the medicals. As a team that needs people playing in the minor leagues I am not sure we can afford another Forrest Whitley. (scouts love the idea of him but he never actually plays) Tall pitcher with injury concerns but good pitches.
