Alternatively, how’s life making under $40k in Houston?

All these posts about income, I'd like to hear what life is like from those barely making it or struggling. It's easy to come here and humble brag that you're making above the national average, but most Houstonians are not that lucky. Maybe someone can find the help they need? Roommates? Living at home? Rock bottom?
