Living in Midtown for a Summer Internship, my first time in Houston. What are some under 21 activities?

Hi everyone! As the title suggests, I've never been to Houston before and I'll be here for 2 months this summer living in Midtown. I don't have a car so I'm planning on using the buses/rail. Are there any events/activities going on this summer that are popular with university students? Any venues that have small local bands perform with relatively cheap tickets? Any hiking groups that have outings on the weekend?
