From Brooklyn to Houston (advice)
I know there are many posts here asking about moving from NYC to Houston, but rarely with much specifics. I work in tech, and they are hinting that I move to Houston, where the HQ is. Coincidentally, a friend has moved to the Energy Corridor in Houston a couple of years ago, and I have visited. I did not like it due to having to get on Katy to get anywhere, and seemed lonely to me. (car to strip mall to car back home etc). I could be wrong, and am not attacking; she loves it, but my lifestyle has always been more urban (walking, close proximity to things), etc.
I live in Northern Brooklyn right now with 2 young children (< 5 years), and my wife. Top criteria is within walking distance: some coffee shop(s), parks/playgrounds, even convenience stores, etc. Energy Corridor is not like this, I'm aware, but my sister doesn't know Houston enough to ask. Some community, and not having to drive too far for access to things, if not within walking.
The houses for rent, and sale look absolutely grand, and a third of the price of NYC! It's amazing – I note that property tax is significantly higher, but that's about it. I know there's no state income tax, but property tax is probably where they get you. Okay, tolerable, not a bad deal still.
Any suggestions on where to check out? I hear East of Downtown – any others?
