How to verify that a general contractor is licensed?

I've seen alot of the same advice for finding a general contractor who won't screw you over, mainly "make sure they're licensed, certified, etc.". Question I have is, how exactly do I find that information?

From what I can tell, TDLR doesn't issue licenses for general contracting- it's all subspecialties like HVAC and electrical. Harris county and COH don't seem to regulate general contracting either. But say I want to hire someone to do a kitchen remodel, drywalling, flooring….is there a regulatory body that I can check with to make sure the person I'm hiring is legit?

I'm a new homeowner, so forgive my naivete, just hoping someone can point me in the right direction or offer some advice. I'd like to be able to rely on online reviews, but some of these companies have little to no online presence (and not sure how much to trust online reviews anyway).
