Is it okay to transport an oversized item in an SUV with the tailgate open?

I have a couch that is 86 inches long. I measured my SUV and it's only 76 inches max. So I have to transport it with the tail end hanging about 1 foot. I have some ratcheting straps so I can tie it down well.
