Have you ever wanted to get away for a few days? Maybe a long weekend is coming up or you just need to get away to cool your jets…Â
We’ve been really “busy” at Houston City Beat over the last few weeks uncovering the best places to venture out to within a few hours driving distance. What we uncovered will amaze you… because it has amazed us…Â
Rockport, Texas
Our first recommended weekend getaway destination is Rockport, Texas.Â
You’ll find this beach town nestled between Victoria and Corpus Christi, Texas. It’s a classic Americana fishing town and it’s been a favorite getaway for many Texans, and Winter Texans, since the 1800s. I can’t say I blame them as the clear beach waters and beautifully clean beaches call you to wander over and sit under the shade of the many palapas that dot the beach fronts.Â
Rockport is a fishing town that also boasts a flourishing economy. Boat building and fishing are what developed this small town. Tourism is also a town stable as Vacationers have enjoyed building Rockport’s tourism economy for over 200 years. Â
What exactly can you do in Rockport and neighboring Fulton, Texas?Â
You’ll find a lot of great options for lodging including rentals, hotels, motels, and even options for Houstonians (and Winter Texans) who love to travel with their homes on wheels. Â
It’s entirely possible to drop your phone off at your vacation bedside so you can fully enjoy bird watching, fishing, and swimming to name a few options. Â
Rockport is also known for its annual Fish and Bird Festival, which celebrates the area’s natural wildlife and birding opportunities. Rockport is a great place for swimming, boating, fishing, and exploring nature.Â
Make sure to visit the Rockport Center for the Arts and the Fulton Mansion. If you’re a history buff, you’ll love the Texas Maritime Museum and the Bay Education Center. The Aquarium at Rockport Harbor gives you a look at what it’s like living under the sea. Â
We stayed in a super cute cottage rental that was cozy and seaside charming. We wandered into town and explored Downtown Rockport.Â
The first stop on our list of getaway to-dos was at the Rockport Winery, https://wineryonthebay.com, for a few glasses of their crafted wine. Â
Shopping from the local businesses and art galleries was next on the list. The local shops curate a great selection of home decor and gift items which are sure to be great conversation starters. Â
There are several lunch and dinner options in Rockport and the neighboring town of Fulton, Texas. We recommend calling in advance to secure your reservation or get a wait time estimate. Below are a few links to our favorite places for both casual and fine dining options:Â
Pier 77 of Fulton has great reviews with a lot of fresh seafood on your plate. Most people that dine at Pier 77 will order and then rave about the shrimp. Visit Pier 77 on FacebookÂ
Apple Dumpling Deli is a place for lunch. They have great reviews so it’s well worth getting there early to enjoy the Chicken Club Salad. Visit Apple Dumpling Deli on FacebookÂ
Hoot’s Country Kitchen is very popular and rumor has it that if you are hungry, this is where you need to go – but come out there early because they do tend to get packed. Visit Hoot’s Country KitchenÂ
