Why Permitless Carry is a Step Too Far: A Responsible Gun Owner’s Perspective
As a responsible gun owner, I fully support the idea of concealed carry with a permit. However, the concept of permitless carry is a step too far for me.
Think about it: when people used to get into arguments, they may have yelled, cussed, or even thrown a punch. But now, with the rise of permitless carry, more and more individuals are reaching for their guns in the heat of the moment. This is happening not just among criminals, but among law-abiding citizens as well. And let's not forget, over 50% of homicides are domestic in nature.
It's not just me that feels this way. In fact, not a single police organization supports permitless carry. It's no secret that an armed public makes things much more dangerous for police officers, and it also requires more resources for them to do their jobs. It's also worth noting that permitless carry makes police officers more apprehensive when responding to calls.
Now, I understand that permitless carry might work in rural areas. But in densely populated cities, it's all too easy for people to accidentally step on one another's toes, which can lead to tragic gun violence. There's also a perception that everyone might be armed, so people are quick to draw their firearms, and as we all know, in a gunfight, the person who draws first has a significant advantage.
It's important to note that the leadership of this state is largely elected by the majority rural and suburban populations. They have a vested interest in making cities look dangerous and unlawful. This way, they can point to the cities and say to their constituents, "look what happens when you let them govern." They pass laws like permitless carry and cause a 4-year felony backlog in our criminal justice system by withholding funds for needed additional courts. All this, just for the sake of re-election.
In Texas, anyone can purchase a gun on the Internet or out of the trunk of a car without a background check. Only FFL sellers require background checks.
I support the Constitution and the right to bear arms, but there must be limits. Just like we can't shout "fire" in a theater, we can't have bazookas. It's up to the citizens to decide what the limits are.
Let's bring back licensed to carry and make sure that only responsible, law-abiding citizens are carrying firearms. Together, we can make our communities safer.
