Why getting our QB and HC of the future this off-season is VERY unlikely.
The 3 things that are guaranteed right now are Death, Taxes, and a daily post on this sub about who we should draft as QB and hire as HC in the off-season.
The two things that people are clamoring for the most are the two least likely things to actually happen. I’ll break down why, and what scenarios we have.
With Lovie only in his first season and is just firing Culley the last thing optics wise the Texans want to do is fire 2 black head coaches back to back. We all want a coaching change to happen but it simply isn’t. The only, and I mean only way it would happen is if we had an absolute generational QB coming out of the draft (and that’s not the case this year).
Which leads people to wonder why is that the only reason we’d part ways with Lovie. The simple answer is you don’t want to have a starting rookie QB learn a system just to blow it up and have him re-learn something new the next year. It’s a nightmare scenario (See the Jaguars as an example). It would essentially put the QB into a scenario where they are in their rookie year twice. Learning 2 systems in 2 years does NOTHING for that players development, just extend how long it takes for the development to happen. (See Justin Fields for an example).
We are going to bring in our HC of the future the year we draft a QB. And because of this years QB class and the optics of firing Lovie, that won’t be this offseason. We want to QB of the future to develop with the HC, the new staff and only have to learn one system so year two can be spent on honing their skills, not re-learning the offense.
It’s time to temper expectations. Strap up for another year of Tampa 2 and mediocre QB play and realize we aren’t one draft away from being competitive (even in our dumpster fire division). We have holes EVERYWHERE on our roster. We will address many of them this draft and build a solid foundation for the future.
