Mayor Sylvester Turner reveals he was diagnosed with cancer, underwent surgery and radiation

During Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner’s seventh annual State of the City address on Nov. 2, he revealed that he received a cancer diagnosis over the summer.

Turner discussed the diagnosis during the interview portion of the event with former ABC-13 anchor Tom Koch. He said in July, before a scheduled trip to France, he went to the dentist for a root canal, but the doctors voiced a deeper concern. After getting a biopsy done, he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer, in his jaw.
