Massive thanks to a kind stranger

My husband and I recently moved to Spring from overseas about 2 weeks ago. I know Spring is not Houston proper but I feel it’s close enough lol.

We are still very much in the early stages of getting life admin sorted so have been using a travel card to pay for things as it’s relatively decent exchange rates compared to our credit cards. It’s been serving us pretty well. Until today.

For whatever reason, my Apple Pay options and home country debit card just would not work to add more funds to the card. I only had $7 or something left to pay for an $80 shop at H‑E‑B. Now, I know I should have checked before going and probably taken a backup option but normally it takes less than 30 seconds to add more funds. No biggie. But just not today.

I got so flustered trying to make it work they took me over to an unused till to try and sort it but it just wasn’t. In the end the chap who had packed the groceries ended up paying for my shopping! I couldn’t believe it and I burst into tears. I was completely mortified but so incredibly touched. A lady also came over to offer to pay or split the cost with the gentleman which he declined. I was completely floored. It was such a tremendously kind thing to do.

I did race home to get some of our emergency cash (I hate carrying it but will always carry some now lol) to pay him back and (unknown to him at the time) a little extra so he could have a beer or two to say thanks. I am just an idiot whose card decided not to work so I couldn’t accept someone paying for me. I’d rather that beautiful gesture be used for someone who is struggling for essentials or something.

I don’t really know what I expect to get from posting this, but I guess it’s just to say while there are some bad things happening in the world, there are some lovely people out there too. Matthew from H‑E‑B Woodlands and the lady whose name I didn’t catch, thank you.
