Today around 1PM I was driving Beltway 8 Northbound, coming from Memorial area and right before the 290 exit ramps. Traffic was moving normally, and out of nowhere I see lights and sirens coming from behind me – 2 police motorcycles. They get onto the left shoulder and pass everyone.

Then, a minute later I start seeing more and more lights and sirens from all over coming up behind. They’re not all together like a tight unit and they’re not even speeding really; coming from all over the lanes going maybe 5-10 over the normal rate of traffic and spaced out from each other between regular vehicles, but all merging over to the left shoulder to pass, lights on and some with sirens on. Police vehicles only, no SWAT, no fire, and no ambulances.

Also no armored vehicles – Some of the cars weren’t even marked patrol cars, they were undercover and non-standard police cars with interior lights turned on. I started counting after the first ten or so had passed and was up to 32 vehicles by the time they stopped coming. Then, I’m assuming they stopped traffic a bit ahead of me because everyone came to a complete stop. I couldn’t see that far past the semis in front of me, but, within about 2 minutes, traffic resumed normal flow, no lanes closed, and I couldn’t see where the cops had even gone. Anyone else happen to be on the hwy when this happened, or have any idea what it was about?

It was too late in the day and the lack of wreckage or other first responders makes me pretty sure it wasn’t about the earlier wreck, or a different one. My assumption is a security detail of some kind, but I don’t even know what would warrant that many units outside of a major major event. Really, just curious, I haven’t seen anything like it before.
