Big Picture Draft/ Rest of Offseason Strategy
Our biggest needs are EDGE, CB, and O line depth. Now EDGE is by far our biggest weakness and I fully expect us to take a guy that can contribute immediately. There are several decent options that should be available in the second round. I'm not gonna name all of them but it seems like there's several quality options that should be available in the second.
To address CB however, instead of taking one in the third, there are a few solid FA guys still available. For comparison, on EDGE and O line the guys left that we could realistically sign are trash but there are solid corners available. We already have Bradley Roby as a solid corner plus gareon conley and hopefully lonnie johnson keeps developing. Additionally, Bob loves to sign veteran guys to 1 year deals so we could sign one of Darqueze Dennard, Logan Ryan, or Aqib Talib (there's more we could get on cheaper deals). Now some people think signing veterans from other teams is bad because it costs you comp picks for next years draft. Don’t worry I already looked and were not expected to get any comp picks in 2021 because of Cobb, Eric Murray, and Timmy Jernigan. Since were already not getting any comp picks, might as well abuse the system and sign veterans to the Bob 1 year special that can come in and make an impact right away, especially with probably shortened offseason from corona.
So realistically in round 3 we go O line, presumably interior since both our tackles are sick and our G/C are average. Only thing that scares me is interior OL is the weakest group this draft but hopefully theres someone that can be a rotation guy/backup that is available at 90.
In the 4th we have options, we could get another edge guy if we like one, get an interior DL since thats a position of some need. But what i would like to do since I'm a biased fan who likes offense is get one of several highish tier receivers that are hopefully still available. Right now on paper we have a strong WR core with Cobb, Stills, Cooks, and Fuller. But maybe not a developmental WR but one that could contribute in a pinch since Fuller has a high risk of injury. We can cut Keke Coutee and WR/ST Deandre Carter. Now instead of a return man who forgets to kneel the ball to take a touchback in the playoffs, we can get Duke Johnson some more touches. We traded a 3rd for him, might as well get him as involved as possible. In todays NFL you don’t really need a great kick return specialist since they’re so often touchbacks. You just need a smart punt returner that knows when to fair catch, when to let it roll, and when to go for the big play. That is Duke Johnson
Then in the 5th and 7th we can get some speacial teamers some more project TE because you can never have enough of those apparently.
In an ideal world we could also trade back from 40 if theres still several EDGE players we like. Besides the Rams, we probably have the least draft capital over the next 2 seasons so it could be smart to move back and accumulate more picks. For better or worse it doesn’t seem like Bob is in any danger of losing his job so he shouldn’t just draft for the now and instead look at the big picture and grow our draft capital. I was looking at trades in previous years around the 40th pick and we could potentially slide down like 15 spots, get a second next year and give up a 4th this year (Dolphins-Saints did this last year). Or slide down less, like 8 spots and get a 3rd next year or this year (Titans-Rams did this 2 years ago).
