Should the Astros attempt a trade for Khalil Watson?
I was curious about this subreddit’s opinion on this proposition. Khalil Watson is a SS who is the Marlins top batting prospect (51st overall by MLB pipeline, #3 in Miami system). He was drafted last year, 2021-16th overall, by Miami but was a consensus top 10 guy and was even mocked to go top 3 with his potential. He fell due to height concerns being a 5’9” SS and also with perceived discipline/character issues.
Those issues came to rear its head recently when Watson got into an argument with an umpire about a check swing during a game and used his bat as a prop to mimic a gun shooting the ump. Obviously he was mad, but Miami took his actions seriously and suspended him indefinitely. He hasn’t played in over 2 weeks and there have been rumors Miami wants to move him and not deal with all his behavioral issues.
Watson does have amazing upside and crushed rookie ball going .394/.524/.606 in just 9 games (season cut due to injury). Miami pushed him to Single A this year where he currently is struggling batting .221/.274/.372 in 59 games with a 40% K rate. This struggle may have caused him to snap, but he has immense upside as a 5 tool player. He has amazing speed and has show promise to develop power which made him a popular draft pick. He has positional flexibility also with being a plus defender.
Houston obviously does not shy away when it comes to trading for projects with issues (see KPJ). Watson’s value is currently at the lowest it can be. Should we make a move for him? He can’t play SS with Peña being there, but he could be our 2B of the future after Altuve. Watson is only 19 years old and still has many years of development before he reaches the majors (projected ETA being 2024). He could also develop into a utility infielder with upside.
Miami is looking for a player with a few years of control. Not sure who we can exactly move but we have a surplus of pitching and Miami loves developing pitching.
